(2019) NEW ENGLAND HARMONICA INTENSIVE
In 2018 and 2019, Master Harmonica teachers Annie Raines and Ronnie Shellist teamed up for NEHI - the New England Harmonica Intensive! They have been joined by country blues master Paul Rishell, blues guitar veteran Nick Adams, Blues Queen Erin Harpe and special guest teachers including John Shirley and Jason Novak for a full weekend of classes, interactive workshops, jams, concerts, and delicious food. It will take place on the grounds of a Victorian estate and carriage house in beautiful Newburyport, MA. These workshops give students a chance to learn new techniques, expand their repertoire and connect with people in the harmonica community. We hope to announce another NEHI date soon.
NEHI 2018 featured 8-10 hours of class offerings, covering playing and soloing techniques, repertoire, blues history, and performing. Examples of subjects taught include: bending and tongue-blocking techniques, special focus on blues masters such as Little Walter and Sonny Boy I & II, reading tab on chromatic, moving spaces in phrasing, rhythms and basslines and creating a groove. There will also be listening sessions, a Saturday night faculty concert, and a student open mic. All levels are welcome, though you will get more out of the classes if you are beyond beginning.
